Miniature Balls for Writing Instruments Print PDF

The stationary industry uses different kinds of materials for balls. Besides the standard materials, such as stainless steel, ceramic, and tungsten carbide, Nanoball is also supplying special materials.

Ball pens consist of many single parts. The mine, which is inside of the pen, is composed of two parts: the refill and the pen tip. The ball, which is pressed into the tip, rotates during the writing process and delivers the ink to the paper.
Ball sizes for pen tips are usually in a range between 0.3mm and 1.2mm. Smaller balls are showing a poor writing line. Particularly Asians prefer to use tiny writing lines, for the sake of the filigree letters.

The most common ball materials are made of stainless steel AISI 420c (1.4034), various tungsten carbides (CE20, Cr24, cobalt free tungsten carbide) and ceramic (Circonium).

The selection of the tungsten carbide depends on the ink type used (oil based, water based, or gel ink).

The most precious material among standard materials is ceramic. Its particular advantage against competiting materials is its that it writes on greased paper (caused by sweat of the hand).

Additional to these standard materials, Nanoball offers ruby balls for exclusive designer ball pens.
