The Ball Company

Hollow Balls in Watches Print PDF
uhrHollow balls with diameters of only 2 mm have been developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute in Dresden. For their application in watches, it was imperative to develop hollow balls with magnetic properties; filled balls proved to be too heavy to be moved in a quick enough way.
In a special sinter process, metal powder is compresses to achieve a perfect blank ball for the succeeding gentle grinding process.  The resulting blank is then brought into its perfect shape by gentle grinding.
These balls replace the traditional hands in exclusive watches of the well-known manufacturer of designer watches, Laco.
In these watches, the crown, which allows for the setting of date and time, also comes in the shape of a ball. These watches are also on the top in terms of quality, not least because of the designer’s passion for detail.  Companies looking for a way to use these watches to advertise their business may have integrated three-dimensional objects between the dial and the class cap.
A magnetic element moves the lightweight hollow balls. Even when touching the ball or even lifting it slightly from the dial, it would always be drawn into its proper position by the magnet.  The same would happen, if you move the ball to a different position on the dial.
Demanding customers are always looking for such extraordinary and exclusive pieces of art.
